RS 700

RS 700

Difficulty level: ★★★

The ultimate single-handed dinghy with gennaker and trappies

The RS700's striking single-handed, trapeze, and gennaker styling is sure to catch your eye. It's the ultimate performance boat, offering the most thrilling experience of any dinghy. There are no dinghies in Japan with the same style. Its uniqueness is reminiscent of a Moth-class boat, which floats above the water using a hydro system. From its style, you can imagine that the RS700 also has the appeal of being "mastered." Sailors who feel dissatisfied with existing dinghies will no doubt be interested.

RS 800

A smart bow tip. The pole passes through the stem and is stored in the bow deck.
The hull is a sandwich structure made from GRP.

RS 800

The inside of the deck is very flat and has an open transom.
There is a foot strap behind the wing for trapeze use.

The RS800 has many elements derived from the long-established International 14 class. This is not surprising, as Phil Morrison, who designed the RS series, is the leading designer of the International 14 class. However, there is no denying that development of the International 14 class, a standard-limited class (a class developed for the purpose of pursuing speed with wide tolerances in class rules), has tended to escalate too much. The pursuit of speed has led to the use of carbon fiber for the hull, mast, and boom, which has driven up the price of the hull.

RS 800

The control sheets are concentrated around the main cam.
This allows either the crew or the skipper to operate it.

RS 800

The RS800 uses a self-tacking system.
The crew can concentrate on the gennaker and balance.

The RS800 can be described as a "monstrous machine that's even more accessible," designed to curb the soaring prices of International 14 class boats and promote their popularity worldwide. The RS800's reputation can be predicted to some extent by comparing the number of boats competing in the British Championships in the UK. According to the British sailing magazine Yacht & Yachting, the number of participating boats in the International 14 class peaked in 2000 and has been declining since (45 boats entered in 2004), but the RS800 sees an average of 60 boats participating (70 boats entered in 2004). These data also show that the popularity of the RS800 in the UK has been remarkable.

RS 800

You can see two rows of convex platforms on both sides. These are useful for entering the deck from the trapeze.

RS 800

The RS800 uses full battens made of Hyde Sails' Mylar film for both the main and jib sails to maintain their shape.

Sailing the RS800 is more powerful than you'd imagine. The huge sails are supported by a double trapeze, and the skiff's slender, low-resistance hull shape generates explosive speeds. Another appealing feature is that even beginners can experience the thrill of high speeds, provided they're sailing with a crew. An exciting world of high speeds awaits, and it's like a dopamine rush.

RS 800

Sailing is such an exciting sport that it's easy to imagine it being difficult...
However, a crew can get on board a monster performance boat with relative ease.

RS 800

Even in light to medium winds, the sail power allows for high speed planing.
The world of high speed is so exciting!

RS 700 Features

The RS700, the ultimate single-hander, is all about its speed and, above all, the ability to sail it solo. When you're tired of searching for a double-handed partner and want to tackle the waves and wind alone, anyone would love to sail a yacht like this. While it's certainly the most difficult of the RS series, the smaller sail makes it accessible to those with little sailing experience. In fact, buyers seem to be those who are not experienced sailors, but rather those who are eager to embrace the allure of speed and coolness. This super dinghy allows non-yachting athletes to compensate for their years of experience with athletic ability, rather than those with extensive sailing experience. Many people have switched from windsurfing or surfing. Of course, I also think it's a good idea for those like 470 or FJ crew members to try it out. I struggled at first because I was switching from a hike-out dinghy, but now there's no turning back.
